Tennis • "This completely feels like the perfect place to retire," Belgian star Kim Clijsters told the spectators Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. "I just wish it wasn't today." The three-time U.S. Open champion had said previously that this year's tournament would be the last of her career. And so, with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) loss to 18-year-old Laura Robson, Clijsters' singles career came to a close. Clijsters, who had previously retired in 2007 only to come back after a hiatus of two-plus years, vowed to stay away for good this time after completing doubles play at Flushing Meadows. > D2
