NBA • All-Star Blake Griffin says his left knee is healed after last month's surgery that forced him to miss the London Olympics, when he worked on his shot and free throws while his U.S. teammates were winning a gold medal.
Griffin said Tuesday that he used the down time to work on becoming a more complete player and that he's ready to play now. The Los Angeles Clippers open training camp on Oct. 1.
NHL issues another proposal to players
NHL • The NHL has issued another proposal to the players' association as a lockout looms next month.
NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr confirmed that the league offered a new proposal — its second this summer — during negotiations Tuesday at the NHL offices. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday to discuss it.
Jury won't charge expelled player
College basketball • A grand jury has declined to charge a former Xavier University basketball player, a week after his expulsion from school.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters says grand jurors heard allegations of sexual assault against Dez Wells but decided against criminal charges.
Last week, the university expelled Wells for what it called a "serious violation" of the school's code of student conduct.
Deters suggested Tuesday that the university should "revisit" its action. The university says the decision is final.
• Duke announced that Art Heyman, the captain of the Blue Devils' first Final Four team, has died.
The school said Tuesday family members say Heyman died Monday night in Florida. The cause of death was not available. He was 71.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski says Heyman was "one of the elite players to ever wear a Blue Devil uniform."
Heyman led Duke to a 69-14 record from 1960-63 and averaged 25 points and nearly 11 rebounds. He was the most outstanding player of the 1963 Final Four.
