For the first half of Thursday's road soccer contest against Jordan, Murray goalkeeper Lizzie Tyler was simply impenetrable. The Beetdiggers earned corner kicks and free kicks by the handful, but Tyler and her back line simply would not be scored upon.

When the Beetdiggers finally did score on a Kyara Brown goal midway through the second half, Murray answered just five minutes later when Tara Furlong's score helped the Spartan's pull even, and eventually earn a 1-1 tie.

"Our defense was just solid tonight," said Tyler. "Jordan kept lining up for those corner kicks, but I had faith we could keep them from scoring."

After at least a dozen corner kicks in both halves, and multiple throw-in opportunities late in the game, Jordan coach Sara Cowley said her team didn't capitalize when it had the opportunity.

"We just didn't take care of business in that first half," said Cowley. "We let them hang around, and you could see them gaining confidence."

The Spartans' confidence didn't falter, even after Tori Smith's beautiful cross to the box found freshman Brown on a play that seemingly could have opened the floodgates.

As the game stretched to extra time, fans from both sides amped up the intensity as every shot, rebound and possible score suddenly became a possible biggest play of the night.

The Beetdiggers thought they had a goal in the first overtime on a throw-in from Brown that found the net, but after a brief discussion, the referees said it was not touched. In the second extra time, a similar goal from the Beetdiggers was disallowed, after referees determined a player had pushed off to gain position.

"I thought our kids really responded to the pressure situations tonight, and it was encouraging to see us get stronger as the game went on," said Murray coach Lisa Willardson.

The Spartans earned their third tie of the season and are 2-1-3 on the year, while Jordan is 2-1-1. —
