Girls' volleyball: Bingham cruises past Taylorsville with help of freshman
Taylorsvile • Bingham earned a convincing 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-14) win Wednesday at Taylorsville to open the volleyball season, but the outcome was just a side note. In reality, the match was a showcase for Bingham freshman Torre Glasker.
"With all the fans and everything, I was really nervous and overwhelmed," Glasker said. "After a few points, though, I settled in."
Glasker hid her emotions well, because she appeared poised and focused from the opening serve. About five minutes into the match, she had spectators throughout the arena wondering out loud, "Who is this girl?"
In her first career high school match, Glasker was the most dominant player on the court. She racked up 14 kills and five blocks in her debut to lead all players. Glasker was also the leader in energy. After every Bingham point, Glasker was the first to cheer and celebrate. She was loudest when one of her teammates scored instead of her.
There was plenty for Glasker to cheer about. As a team, the Miners had five service aces, seven blocks and 34 kills, and none of the three sets was ever in question. While the team effort was an impressive start to the season, the match was about Glasker.
Bingham coach Melissa Glasker, who is Torre's mother, said her daughter was raised playing the game. Melissa has coached high school volleyball in Utah for 20 years, so Torre has had her fair share of time on the volleyball court. Melissa said those countless hours practicing have given her daughter an advanced understanding of the game.
"She has an acumen for volleyball, just because she has been in the gym her whole life," Melissa said. "I was coaching at Cottonwood when I was pregnant with her, so she was born in the gym."
It was just the first match of many in her career, but Torre made it pretty clear on Wednesday that she was born to play the game.
R Bingham sweeps Taylorsville 3-0 on opening night after being knocked out of the state tournament by the Warriors last year.
• Bingham freshman outside hitter Torre Glasker has 14 kills and five blocks in her first high school game.
• Junior libero Kina Tausinga has three aces for the Miners.
