Anyone hoping Utah coach Kyle Whittingham would proclaim who his starting quarterback is following Tuesday's scrimmage will be disappointed. Whittingham said veteran Jordan Wynn looked the best out of the four who played in the session but he wants to analyze the tape first before making any changes to the depth chart. Wynn was 6-for-9 for 85 yards, Travis Wilson was 4-for-9 for 30 yards and a touchdown, Jon Hays was 3-for-6 for 37 yards and a touchdown and Adam Schulz, a freshman who has made the most progress in the last year according to Whittingham, was 8-for-9 for 153 yards and three touchdowns. While some might view talk of a possible quarterback battle between Wynn and Wilson as a distraction, Whittingham said he wasn't worried. "The more depth you build the more competition is going on," he said. "I don't think it's healthy to have a guy at No. 1 when there is no way he can lose his job. That is a recipe for complacency. What we have done the last four years is start to fill in the depth at all positions, not at all of them, but we are further along than we have ever been." That depth includes the quarterback spot, where the Utes feel they have several guys who could step in and play even with the shoulder injury to Chase Hansen that took him out of the mix. So is Whittingham just toying with Wynn about his position being open to make sure the veteran stays on his toes? You can have your own opinion there, but Wilson has looked good in practice and he for one believes he has a chance. "I'm definitely pushing for it now," he said. "I want to grind it out until they make a decision and be happy to come out and compete every day." Wynn, who said his shoulder is stronger than ever, doesn't mind the competition. "If they came out and said Travis and Jon have no chance or if they said Travis and Jon are the starters I'd come out the same way and bust my butt and go as hard as I can," he said. As for the rest of the undecided positions, including offensive tackle and the linebackers, Whittingham said progress was made. "The offensive tackles are starting to play somewhat close where they need to be," he said. "When we first started it was way off base and they've made progress, but we still need every bit of the next two weeks." Dallin Rogers had three catches for 16 yards and a touchdown, DeVonte Christopher had three for 59 yards and Dres Anderson had three for 42 yards. Kelvin York led the rushing backs with seven carries for 25 yards and a touchdown and James Poole had five carries for 19 yards. Freshman Jarrell Oliver had 16 carries for 53 yards. Running back Lucky Radley and defensive end/linebacker Jacoby Hale suffered hamstring pulls in the session. Safety Quade Chappuis hurt his shoulder but checked out Ok, Whittingham said.
