The Carolina Panthers reached a five-year contract extension with running back Jonathan Stewart on Saturday.
Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says the team is "thrilled" to keep Stewart around to work with fellow running back DeAngelo Williams, who received a five-year contract last year, and new fullback Mike Tolbert.
The new deal keeps Stewart a Panther through 2017.
Financial terms of the deal weren't immediately available. ESPN, citing sources, reported the deal includes $22.5 million in guaranteed money and is worth $36.5 million overall.
Hurney calls Stewart a "playmaker who came make a difference in games" and that "we have seen the impact he and DeAngelo Williams have had on our team."
The move came before the Panthers opened the preseason Saturday night with a 26-13 loss to the Houston Texans.
Along with rushing for 761 yards and four touchdowns last season, Stewart also caught 47 passes for 413 yards receiving with three scores. He served extensively as the team's third-down back last season.
Stewart has run for 26 touchdowns in his four seasons.
Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday in Davie, Fla., on a domestic violence charge, accused of head-butting his newlywed wife during an argument in front of their home outside Miami. Johnson and his wife, Evelyn Lozada, were at dinner and she confronted him about a receipt she had found for a box of condoms, said Davie police Capt. Dale Engle. The argument got heated and continued on the drive home, he said.
When they arrived in their driveway, the 34-year-old Johnson head-butted Lozada, she told police. Lozada was treated at a hospital for a cut to her forehead, Engle said.
Johnson, who changed his last name back to Johnson from Ochocinco after his July 4 wedding to Lozada, was being held Saturday night in Broward County Jail where he will remain until he can appear before a judge, which Engle says might not be until Monday.
