London • Bike racer Arielle Martin has had surgery after suffering severe injuries in a crash last week that knocked her out of the London Olympics.
The 27-year-old from Cedar Hills was expected to be a medal contender in BMX cycling this week, but was hurt July 30 when the chain on her bike broke and she crashed in her final training session before departing for London from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
She suffered a badly lacerated liver and a collapsed right lung.
Martin had been moved out of intensive care to a trauma unit at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, her family said on Martin’s Facebook page, but "had a few setbacks" that required surgery to remove "over 2 liters of fluid."
"She came through it like the champ she is and this should help the healing process," the family wrote.
A graduate of Lone Peak High School and Brigham Young University, Martin had finally qualified for the Olympics after missing the 2008 Beijing Games because of a crash at the final qualifying event. She had hoped to win a medal, after finishing fourth at the most recent world championships.
