London • Led by former Highland High School star Logan Tom, the U.S. women's volleyball team won its Olympic debut Saturday night.
The American women held on to defeat South Korea in four sets (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21) in pool play, setting up a Monday evening rematch against Brazil, the team that defeated the U.S. in the 2008 gold-medal match in Beijing.
The 6-foot Tom, who attended Stanford, recorded nine points against South Korea, including eight spikes.
Tom is appearing in her fourth Olympic Games, but chasing only her second medal after the team she led in 2008 earned silver after falling to the Brazilians.
The Americans have four more games in pool play.
