Utah's Langi to go on mission

Utah running back Harvey Langi always has had plans to go on a mission at some point during his college career. Apparently, a strong spring showing wasn't enough to deter him from those plans.

The former Bingham High star has decided to go on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and leaves for Tampa, Fla., on July 25, Utah officials announced Saturday.

The sophomore had a disappointing freshman season, rushing just 13 times for 70 yards, but came on strong at the end of spring ball and was listed along with junior college transfer Kelvin York as John White's backup.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said during spring ball he was pleased with Langi's improvement, calling him the "Most Improved Player" at the end of the spring session and said the Utes would find ways to use him, particularly since he is a versatile back.

Those plans are on hold now.

Even with Langi out of the picture, the Utes remain deep at running back with redshirt freshman Jarrell Oliver also having a good spring session.
