Riverton’s Brandon Watson aims to make U.S. diving team

Riverton’s Brandon Watson will compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials for diving on Wednesday, hoping to earn a spot at the London Olympics next month.

The former Brigham Young University diver must finish in the top two of the 3-meter springboard to qualify. That’s going to be tough, considering the competition includes three-time Olympian Troy Dumais and 2008 Olympian Chris Colwill.

Watson competes in the preliminaries on Wednesday morning at the King County Aquatic Center outside of Seattle, and the semifinals on Wednesday night if he qualifies.

The finals are Sunday.

The reigning swimming and diving athlete of the year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation — that’s the league in which the Cougars compete — won his second national championship in the 1-meter springboard event last year, but that discipline is not in the Olympics.

His best finish on 3-meter at a national championship is third in 2010.
