NFL • The New York Jets have agreed to a 3-year contract with nose tackle Sione Pouha, who would have become a free agent Tuesday.
The team considered re-signing Pouha a top priority after the seven-year veteran had a strong 2011 season even as the team’s overall defense slumped.

Pouha, who has spent his entire pro career with the Jets after playing at East High School and the University of Utah, had 58 tackles last season and also was credited for a safety. He’s considered a team leader, something the Jets desperately need after a season marred by a fractured locker room.
The 33-year-old Pouha became a starter when Rex Ryan was hired as coach in 2009 and has been one of the Jets’ most reliable defensive players for the last three seasons.
UNC football gets postseason ban
College football • The NCAA infractions committee has hit North Carolina’s football program with a one-year postseason ban, a reduction of 15 scholarships and three years of probation following an investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct.
In a ruling Monday, the committee said the school was responsible for multiple violations, including academic fraud and a failure to monitor its football program. It also issued a three-year show-cause penalty for former assistant coach John Blake, who had received personal loans from an NFL agent.
In September, North Carolina announced it would impose several penalties of its own.
