Freshman forward George Matthews will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left foot, Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said Thursday.

The injury was suffered in last week's loss at Arizona State, where he played a season-high 12 minutes.

Matthews, a freshman from Phoenix, was the one member of Jim Boylen's class to join the Utes this season. An athletic 6-foot-5 forward, Matthews struggled this season to recover from a broken bone in the same foot, suffered last spring, and to get in basketball shape.

Popular among fans, Matthews had trouble winning over Utah coaches. Matthews appeared in 16 games, averaging five minutes. He averaged 0.6 points and 0.9 rebounds per game, and made just 1 of 20 3-point attempts.
