State colleges: Weber State beats Montana State, moves into first place in Big Sky

Bozeman, Mont. • Damian Lillard and Byron Fulton scored 17 points each to lead Weber State to a 79-70 victory against Montana State on Wednesday night.

Scott Bamforth had 15 points and Kyle Tresnak 14 for the Wildcats (21-4, 13-1 Big Sky), who moved a half-game in front of idle Montana for first place in the conference standings. Weber State, which defeated the Grizzlies in January, visits Montana in the regular-season finale on Feb. 28.

Shawn Reid scored 31 points and made five 3-pointers for the Bobcats (11-14, 6-8), and Mohammed Fall added 13 points.

Lillard had four steals for the Wildcats, who never trailed and shot 54.2 percent (26 of 48) from the floor for the game. Montana State used a 22-6 run to start the second half to get within 48-46. But Jordan Richardson hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 Weber State run, and the Bobcats got no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Oakland 76, Southern Utah 68 (OT) • In Rochester, Mich., Reggie Hamilton and Travis Bader combined for 59 points as Oakland, Mich., defeated the Thunderbirds.

The duo took 35 of the Golden Grizzlies’ 48 shots and combined to go 17 for 18 at the free-throw line to lead Oakland (15-13, 9-7 Summit) to its third straight win.

Hamilton made just 7 of 21 shots but was 13 for 13 at the line to finish with 30 points; Bader was 10 of 14 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the charity stripe for 29 points. The rest of the team combined to shoot 4 for 13 from the floor and 9 for 16 from the free-throw line for 17 points.

Damon Heuir led Southern Utah (13-14, 8-9) with 18 points, including three free throws with 3 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. He also had six assists.

The Thunderbirds scored just three points in overtime, making 1 of 8 shots and committing two turnovers.
