Kragthorpe: Kyle Korver is married, and other Bulls insights

First Published Feb 13 2012 09:38 am • Last Updated Feb 18 2012 04:48 pm

During my second annual trip to watch the three former Jazz players now performing for the Chicago Bulls, I saw a girl holding a sign inviting Bulls guard Derrick Rose to the prom, but nothing along the lines of the usual marriage proposals for Kyle Korver.

Turns out, he’s taken.

His summer wedding was far less publicized than that of former Jazz forward Kris Humphries, but it did happen. Korver happily confirmed that he was married to Juliet Richardson on Aug. 10.

She’s a professional singer-songwriter. They were introduced in Salt Lake City while Korver was in his final season with the Jazz (2009-10), before the popular player departed as a free agent.

Other insights on the Bulls:

• As of Sunday’s loss at Boston, the Bulls completed a nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record. Rose, the NBA’s reigning MVP, did not play Sunday because of back spasms and All-Star forward Luol Deng (wrist) missed the defeats at Miami and Philadelphia.

Even with a string of injuries and a road-heavy schedule, Chicago (23-7) owns the best record in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of Miami. While the Heat have played the same number of home and road games, the Bulls remarkably have played 10 fewer games at home. They’re 9-1 at home and 14-6 on the road.

That means 23 of their remaining 36 games are at the United Center, which should give them a big edge in their battle with Miami for the No. 1 seed in the East.

• The Bulls have trouble scoring at times, but they’re an intriguing team because of their defense. Even with so many opponents having played at home, where offense comes more easily, Chicago is holding teams to 87.1 points and 42.5-percent shooting.

Carlos Boozer’s defense remains a problem, with too many opposing guards able to drive down the lane. Coach Tim Thibodeau occasionally keeps him on the bench in the fourth quarter for that reason. Ronnie Brewer remains a good defender and Korver has improved. The Bulls do a great job of closing out on 3-point shooters, allowing only 32.5-percent success (the Jazz also have improved markedly in that area).

• The Bulls have played more games than any team in the league, which will give them more opportunity to rest and get healthy in the second half of the 66-game season. Even before the nine-game trip, they had a stretch of seven games in nine days.
