State colleges: University of Utah finishes softball tournament with win

Kelsi Hoopiiaina, Tia Palauni and Joni Cook each collected two hits to help the Utah softball team defeat Portland State 3-1 on Sunday in the Utes’ final game of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

Utah pitcher Generra Nelson did not allow an earned run and picked up her second complete game of the season.

Utah State vs. Campbell, canceled • The Aggies’ final game of the Red & Black Showcase in Athens, Ga., was canceled due to cold weather. USU finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Utah Valley 11, Southern Utah 3 (5 innings) • Tiffany Mills pitched her second consecutive complete game and struck out seven for the Wolverines in St. George.

The Thunderbirds (0-2) committed five errors, leading to seven unearned runs.

Minnesota 8, Weber State 0 (5) • The Wildcats (2-3) managed just two hits in their final game of the Sportco Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas.

Dixie State • The Red Storm won two games Sunday at the Las Vegas Desert Stinger tournament, defeating Montana State-Billings 6-3 and Cal State San Bernadino 12-4. Dixie (5-2) went 4-1 over the weekend and set a tournament record with 12 home runs.

Women’s tennis

Utah 7, Denver 0 • After the Utes (2-2) swept all three doubles matches, Callie Craig clinched the match with her victory at No. 3 singles.
