State colleges: BYU’s Miles Batty places second at Wanamaker Mile in 3:54.54 to break collegiate record

New York • Miles Batty finished second Saturday night at the prestigious Wanamaker Mile, but the BYU senior and defending NCAA Indoor Mile champion broke the collegiate mile record at the Millrose Games in New York City.

While Batty was in New York, some of his teammates competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle.

Shaquille Walker was edged at the finish line in the 800 meters, placing second in 1:51.05. Iowa’s James Eichberger placed first with the identical time. The men’s 1,600 relay team of James McAllister, Justin Hedin, Ryan Waite and Walker was second in 3:15.37.

Utah State • Sonia Grabowka cleared 13 feet, 31/2 inches to win the women’s pole at the Boise State Team Challenge in Nampa, Idaho. Several Aggies also competed in the Husky Classic in Seattle, including Nick Bolinder, who was highest Aggies’ finishers at the meet, placing fifth in the men’s 3,000 meters in 8 minutes, 30.86 seconds.

Southern Utah • Danielle West won the 3,000 meters at the Husky Classic, finishing in 9:51.36. Ashley Gray was fourth in the 3,000, finishing in 9:58.10.

Utah • Klaudia Rokossa was second in the women’s pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 101/4 inches at the Husky Classic.

BYU 2, No. 11 Oregon 1; BYU 12, UC Santa Barbara 4 (6) • In Tempe, Ariz., the Cougars scored a run in the top of the seven inning to upset the Ducks. In a six-inning game against UCSB, Delaney Willard was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored for BYU (3-2).

Utah State 8, St. John’s 4; No. 14 Georgia 8, Utah State 0 (5) • In Athens, Ga., the Aggies scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Red Storm at the Red & Black Showcase. The Aggies lost in five innings to the Bulldogs in Game 2 of the day.

CSU Bakersfield 5, Weber State 4; No. 5 Oklahoma 12, Weber State 2 (5) • In Las Vegas, the Wildcats (2-2) lost twice during the Sportco Kickoff Classic, a day after winning their first two games of the season.

Utah Valley 5, Southern Utah 2 • In St. George, Deianna Russell had two RBIs, and pitcher Tiffany Mills allowed six hits over seven innings, as the Wolverines defeated the Thunderbirds in both teams’ season opener.

Dixie State 3, Central Washington 2; Dixie State 6, Western Oregon 4 • In Las Vegas, the Red Storm (3-2) bounced back from a loss to Western Washington on Friday to win twice Saturday in the Desert Stinger Tournament.

SLCC 17-5, Western Nevada 3-6 • In St. George, No. 2-ranked Salt Lake Community College split a doubleheader Saturday, winning the first game 17-3 in five innings and losing the second game 6-5 in 10 innings. In Game 1, Maddy Woodward was 2-for-2 with a home run as eight Bruins had two RBIs. In Game 2, Savanah Weber went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for SLCC (16-3), but Western Nevada scored twice in the bottom of the 10th inning.
