COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Utah State’s Michael Smith ran for 124 yards and a touchdown to lead the North to a 24-19 victory over the South in the Players All-Star Classic on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Ark.
Smith’s 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the North a 17-16 lead and helped him earn MVP honors.

Serena, U.S. take lead on Belarus
TENNIS • Serena Williams beat Olga Govortsova 7-5, 6-0 in Worcester, Mass., to give the United States a 2-0 lead over Belarus in the Fed Cup. Christina McHale beat Anastasiya Yakimova 6-0, 6-4 in the opening match before Williams put the Americans one win away from advancing in the best-of-five series in World Group II. Belarus was playing without Australian Open champion and world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, who was out with a lower back injury.
Chavez Jr. retains WBC belt
BOXING • Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained the WBC middleweight title, earning a unanimous decision over fellow Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio in San Antonio. The judges scored the bout 118-110, 116-112 115-113 for Chavez. Nonito Donaire won the co-main event, earning a 12-round split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to win the WBO junior featherweight title.
