Miller Racing to compete in Grand Sports class

First Published Jan 25 2012 02:59 pm • Last Updated Jan 26 2012 12:31 am

Salt Lake City-based Miller Racing will be in Daytona Beach, Fla., this weekend to compete in the Grand Sports class of the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

After competing in a limited schedule of events in 2011, the team is preparing to contest the full 11-race season as well as a limited number of events with the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championship.

Roger Miller and Englishman Ian James will be co-driving the No. 158 Miller Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302R. The 37-year-old James, who joined the team this year, is a rarity in Grand-Am because he is one of few drivers who won races in every Grand-Am-sanctioned class, including Daytona Prototype and GT in the Rolex Sports Car Series as well as Grand Sports and Sports Touring in the CTSCC.

The car will be maintained and campaigned by Dempsey Racing, owned by actor Patrick Dempsey. Larry H. Miller Dealerships, Miller Motorsports Park and the Ford Racing High Performance Driving school are sponsoring the race car.

"I feel we had some success in 2011 and we certainly had a lot of fun," said Miller. "We are fortunate to have Ian joining us this year, and look to take our program to the next level."

For James, returning to the seat of a Mustang will be a homecoming of sorts.

"I am delighted to be joining Miller Racing and get back behind the wheel of Mustang, in which I have had much success in the past," he said. "Roger has assembled a first-class team, and I am looking forward to a successful season."

The team will begin practice on the historic 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course. The 2.5-hour race will take the green flag at 11:30 a.m. MST Friday, and be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, on SPEED.
