State colleges: Utah women’s basketball beats Arizona in overtime

The Utes downed Arizona 65-60 in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday, led by Janita Badon with 22 points. The game saw several lead changes in the second half, helped on the Utes’ side by two 3-pointers in rapid succession by Rachel Messer. Taryn Wicijowski and Michelle Plouffe each had double-doubles in the overtime win. Utah outrebounded Arizona 46 to 37.

BYU 72, Loyola Marymount 48 • Kristen Riley led the Cougars with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in their win in Los Angeles. It is the sixth West Coast Conference win in a row for BYU. Riley shot 80 percent from the field, while BYU as a whole had a shooting percentage of 50.9 percent.

Fresno State 90, Utah State 67• The Aggies were trounced in Logan on Thursday night, breaking their six-game winning streak. Junior Devyn Christensen put up a season-high 22 points for USU, but the Aggies were buried when Fresno State shot 59 percent from the field in the second half.

Northern Arizona 71, Weber State 58 • The Wildcats fell in Flagstaff, Ariz., dropping to 2-17 and 0-6 in the Big Sky Conference. Megan Patterson led Weber State with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, but the team made just 20 percent of its 3-pointers, compared with Northern Arizona’s 42.9 percent.

Lewis-Clark State College 57, Westminster 50• The Griffins lost in Lewiston, Idaho, putting an end to their six-game win streak. The game was back-and-forth for much of the first half, but despite 17 points from Westminster’s Dana Bates, Lewis-Clark pulled away for the win in the second half.

Men’s basketball

In Cedar City, Oakland ran away with a 72-63 victory over Southern Utah on Thursday night. Ramell Taylor scored 17 points and Damon Heuir 11 for the Thunderbirds (9-10, 4-5). Southern Utah made all 14 attempts at the free-throw line, but Oakland went 22 of 35 as the Thunderbirds were called for 26 fouls to the Grizzlies’ 14. The Thunderbirds whittled the deficit to 45-42 on Ray Jones Jr.’s layup with 10:47 to go but got no closer.

Westminster 70, Lewis-Clark State College 62 • The Griffins rode a season-high shooting percentage of 57.7 percent to a win in Lewiston, Idaho on Thursday night, with 40 points in the paint. Ben Walker led Westminster with 18 points, and Tanner Gregory, Jordan Hayter and AJ Reilly also scored in double digits. The Warriors tied the game with 5:01 left, but the Griffins’ 10-2 run sealed the win.
