Weber State basketball: Rolling Wildcats getting healthy

Ogden • Weber State is rolling, Northern Arizona is stuck in the mud and Randy Rahe is worried.

Never mind that the Wildcats are enjoying their best start to a season in 32 years when they burst out to a 16-1 record in 1980.

Part of a coach’s job is to worry.

"They are a dangerous team," Rahe said as his Wildcats (14-3, 6-0 Big Sky) prepare to play the Lumberjacks (5-13, 1-5) on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Dee Events Center.

"The [NAU] players are playing loose and carefree and that makes them dangerous," Rahe concluded.

So far, though, with interim coach Dave Brown, the Lumberjacks have lost five straight games after starting the conference season with a win over Sacramento State.

Rahe did acknowledge one important fact — Weber State just needs to play like it can, disciplined and smart, to win.

"We need to be locked in and ready to go," he said.

As well as the Wildcats have played, certain events have potentially made them even better. Starting forwards Kyle Bullinger and Frank Otis have returned after missing nine games each with injuries.

And Weber State has Damian Lillard, named to the John Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list Tuesday. The junior guard continues to lead the nation in scoring at 25.5 points a game.
