West Valley City • Coming off an 0-3 trip to Alaska and finding themselves down 1-0 after 17 seconds against Colorado, the Utah Grizzlies did an admirable about-face Wednesday night.

They still lost, though. Colorado scored a short-handed goal with 2:54 left in regulation to force overtime and the Eagles eventually scored a 5-4 shootout victory over Utah at the Maverik Center. The Grizzlies suffered their fourth straight defeat and, after a 7-1 start this season, dropped to 13-10.

"Big-time disappointed," said Utah coach Kevin Colley. "Our team effort wasn't there. Emotion. Intensity. It just wasn't there as a team."

Utah overcame Colorado's quick score and built a 3-1 lead after first-period goals by Justin Dowling, Matt Reber and Blair Yaworski.

The Eagles rallied with two second-period goals, but Jeff LoVecchio muscled a backhand shot past Colorado's Kyle Jones to make it 4-3 with 9:31 remaining.

With four minutes left, the Grizzlies went on a power play, looking to ice the victory. Instead, Utah failed to clear the puck after a sensational breakaway stop by goalie Andrew Engelage.

Colorado's Michael Forney gained control along the boards and from just inside the blue line flipped what appeared to be a harmless looking shot toward the goal.

Engelage couldn't stop it, however, and the Eagles prevailed in the shootout when its final skater, Aaron Schneekloth, scored. The Grizzlies and Eagles play again Friday night, with Utah looking for its first victory since Dec. 4

"It's just going to take everybody put their head down and going to work," said Colley. "I don't know why we're afraid of leaving it all out on the ice. It's frustrating to watch from the bench. But we put ourselves in this hole and we have to get it together." —
