SANTA CLARA, Calif. • Santa Clara's women's basketball team hit three straight 3-pointers to tip Southern Utah 79-78 in the final 75 seconds of their game here Friday night.
Trailing by seven with the clock winding down the Broncos put the ball in the hands of Alyssa Shoji and she nailed two 3-pointers in 17 seconds to trim the deficit to 78-76 following an SUU free throw by DJ Norman. SCU was able to get a defensive stop and took the ball out of bounds with six seconds left in the game, then Ashley Armstrong's trey gave the Thunderbirds a victory.
SUU freshman point guard Hailey Mandelko continued to show her scoring prowess in the loss, finishing the night with 21 points on 7-12 shooting. Transfer Kimie Hawkins had her biggest game as a Thunderbird with 17 points and seven rebounds. The Broncos were led by Shoji and Ruta Zurauskyte who each had 21 points in the contest.
The Broncos improve to 2-1 on the season with the win while the Thunderbirds start the year with an 0-2 mark. SUU will be back in action this Sunday night at Oregon State.
