St. Petersburg, Fla. • Dan Wheldon is being remembered not only as a champion driver but as a devoted husband, caring father, loyal friend, beloved son — and a neat freak.

Family members, friends, fellow drivers and hundreds of supporters said goodbye to Wheldon during a memorial service Saturday that included heart-wrenching letters by his wife and little sister, a story-filled eulogy by the best man at his wedding and two gripping songs by Wynonna Judd. There were several references to Wheldon's love of keeping everything tidy.

The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner was one of the sport's most popular drivers. He died last Sunday in IndyCar's season finale at Las Vegas.

He was buried in a private funeral service following Saturday's public memorial at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg.

Martin, Johnson nab top starting spots

Talladega, Ala. • Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson have given Hendrick Motorsports a sweep of the front row at Talladega Superspeedway.

Martin posted a lap at 181.367 mph in Saturday's qualifying. Johnson was second at 181.360 to give the Chevrolets from Hendrick the first two starting spots in Sunday's race. It's the third time this season Hendrick cars have swept the front row for a superspeedway event.

Clint Bowyer qualified third and was followed by Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne and Hendrick drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Paul Menard qualified seventh and was followed by David Ragan, Sprint Cup Series points leader Carl Edwards and Ryan Newman.

Sunday will be the first major race since two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed in last weekend's IndyCar season finale.

Wallace subs in for Truck Series victory

Talladega, Ala. • Mike Wallace proved to be a suitable substitute for Elliott Sadler at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, racing to his first Truck Series victory since 2000.

Wallace was pushed to the win by Ron Hornaday Jr. as the trucks finally figured out the two-car tandem draft that drivers have used this season in the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races at Daytona and Talladega, the two fastest tracks.

Wallace was making just his second start of the season. He was called by Kevin Harvick Inc. last week when Sadler pulled out of the race to stay home with his wife as they await the birth of their second child. Wallace said the plan to work with Hornaday for the entire race was hatched immediately after he accepted the ride. —
