Washington, D.C. • So much for Real Salt Lake's winning streak.

Dwayne De Rosario scored the fastest hat trick in Major League Soccer history Saturday night, leading D.C. United to a 4-1 victory over RSL.

De Rosario assisted on another goal as D.C. United snapped Real Salt Lake's five-game winning streak — the longest in the league this season.

Said RSL's Kyle Beckerman, "When De Rosario is on, he's certainly a dangerous player and I thought they played to their style — sit back and then strike."

For Real Salt Lake, the game was its fifth game in 22 days.

With two more games coming up next week, coach Jason Kreis juggled his lineup and rest some of his regulars.

It showed.

RSL was out of sync from the beginning.

"I'm disappointed," Kreis said. "Obviously … I'm very disappointed that we reacted the way we did after giving up the first goal."

D.C. United struck first in the 13th minute.

After a perfectly placed pass by De Rosario, Andy Najar beat keeper Nick Rimando, who didn't have a chance.

In the 22nd minute, D.C. United extended its lead when Najar and De Rosario hooked up again.

This time, Najar fired a long cross to De Rosario, who was not challenged as he raced down the middle of the field and into the box.

He headed the ball past Rimando, making it 2-0.

"… A world-class ball," De Rosario said, referring the Najar's assist.

Five minutes later, De Rosario struck again.

A D.C. United attack resulted in a scramble in front of the goal. The ball bounced to De Rosario, who was clear from 24 yards away.

He rifled an expertly located shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net that made it 3-0.

The onslaught continued in the 31st minute, when De Rosario scored again.

On a free kick from 30 yards away, he started a long blast toward the middle of the goal, but hooked it past Rimando, giving De Rosario his second hat trick of the season.

"He was brilliant," Kreis said. "It was one of those nights where, if you give a player like that a yard, then he's going to punish you. And I think he punished us every time that we gave him a yard. So hats off to him."

RSL avoided the shutout when Alvaro Saborio scored his 10th goal of the season in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, midfielder Javier Morales, sidelined since May after suffering a horrendous ankle injury, was available but did not play.

"I felt like the game was lost and that there was probably nothing positive that could come out of playing," Kreis said. "I felt like it was just too big of a risk." —
