Basketball • The son of one of the top players in BYU basketball history said Tuesday morning that he will follow in his father's footsteps and become a Cougar.

The Tribune has learned Jordan Chatman, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Washington, and the son of former BYU forward Jeff Chatman, committed to BYU basketball coach Dave Rose and intends to sign with BYU during November's early signing period.

"I love their style of play," Jordan Chatman told therecruitscoop.com website. "I love the up-tempo system that coach Rose runs. That was a big factor in my decision."

Chatman also had offers from Utah, Utah State, Washington State, Stanford, Portland and Boston College, according to the elder Chatman, who was listed at 6-6 when he played for BYU. In the last month he narrowed his choices to BYU, Stanford, Utah and Washington State.

Chatman has been hailed as one of the top five players in the state of Washington this year.

Jordan Chatman is expected to depart on an LDS Church mission upon graduation next spring, and won't suit up for the Cougars until the 2014-15 season.

Last week, Lone Peak High junior Nick Emery and sophomore T.J. Haws committed to the Cougars. Chatman said their commitments had very little impact on his decision to pick BYU.

Klinsmann, U.S. lose 1-0 to Belgium

Soccer • The U.S. national soccer team lost to Belgium 1-0 Tuesday, leaving Jurgen Klinsmann without a win in three games since he was hired as the Americans' coach.

This was the first road game for the U.S. since Klinsmann came aboard. The Americans earlier tied Mexico and lost to Costa Rica.

Nicolas Lombaerts' half volley in the 55th minute was the only goal in an exhibition game dominated by the Belgians on the rain-soaked field.

Klinsmann, a former German star and coach, is looking to assemble the players who will play in the World Cup qualifiers that start next June. He pointed to such promising players as Juan Agudelo, Jose Torres, Brek Shea and Timmy Chandler.

RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman played during the second half.
