Cedar City • Southern Utah, coming off its first conference football championship since 1993, opens fall camp Tuesday.
The Thunderbirds will work out daily at 4:30 p.m. before their first session in pads Saturday. Two-a-days start Monday, with the first scrimmage scheduled for Aug. 13.
Southern Utah opens the season Sept. 3 at South Dakota State. The home opener is Sept. 10 against Sacramento State.
Other games highlighting the schedule include a visit to UNLV on Sept. 24 and a trip to Weber State on Oct. 22.
"We're all excited to get going," said Ed Lamb, the 2010 Great West Coach of the Year and Eddie Robinson Award finalist. " ⦠I think our talent level is as good as it has been. We have a chance to be a pretty good team."
The Thunderbirds are preparing for their final season in the Great West Conference prior to next year's move into the Big Sky.
Southern Utah went 6-5 last year, including 4-0 in the Great West and 5-1 in its last six games.
The only late-season loss came in the finale at Eastern Washington, where SUU fell 31-24 in the final minute to a team that eventually won the Football Championship Subdivision national championship.
The Thunderbirds' offense is led by junior quarterback Brad Sorensen, who threw for 21 touchdowns and a school-record 3,231 yards last season.
