Des Moines, Iowa • Leif Arrhenius placed second in the discus, throwing 201 feet, 3 inches to help BYU take an early lead Wednesday after the first day of the four-day NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Cougars have 17.5 points after three events. BYU's Chris Little and Victor Weirich placed third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. Little cleared 17-61/2 and Weirich 17-23/4.

"We were able to score a lot of points today," BYU coach Mark Robison said. "It was a good day, I was very pleased with how everyone performed. We will have to see how the next few days go, but we can do some really good things."

Weber State's Brett Hales advanced to the 3,000-meter steeplechase finals. He ran 8 minutes, 46.52 seconds Wednesday to finish seventh out of 24 runners. The top 14 advanced to Saturday's final.

Nebraska coach dies

Nebraska assistant coach Mark Colligan died Wednesday while in Iowa for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championships.

The school said in a news release that the 47-year-old Colligan was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Des Moines early Wednesday afternoon. Colligan had been with the Huskers since 1987 and served as the program's throws coach. —
