Houston Astros draft former Northridge standout Dominique Taylor

Salt Lake Community College freshman and former Northridge High standout Dominique Taylor was among a handful of Utahns taken on the third day of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft.

Also drafted on the final day were Zach Jones, a senior at Stanford and Jordan High catcher; Travis Huber, a former West Jordan athlete and sophomore at the College of Southern Idaho; and Tyler Chism, a senior outfielder at Gonzaga and Taylorsville High graduate.

Taylor, drafted in the 33rd round by Houston, was also the 1,000th overall player selected. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound outfielder paced the Bruins with a .385 batting average and 54 runs batted in. SLCC finished the season at 49-16, losing in the championship round of the Region 18 Tournament.

Jones, a 34th round pick by Arizona, finished his senior season at Stanford with a .261 batting average in 55 games. The Draper native scored a team-high 42 runs.

Huber, taken by Florida in the 39th round, is a right-handed pitcher who appeared in 14 games for CSI. He finished with a 6-3 record and a 3.75 earned-run average as Southern Idaho finished 34-22.

Chism, drafted by Kansas City in the 43rd round, hit .313 for the Bulldogs, who finished the season at 32-19-1.
