The Utah State men's basketball team just got bigger, more athletic and a bit more talented.
Jarred Shaw, a 6-foot-11 center who played two seasons at Oklahoma State, will transfer to USU, Shaw told The Tribune on Monday morning.
Shaw, a former high school teammate of Utah State's all-conference point guard Brockeith Pane, will sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules but then will have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2012.
"I thought transferring to Utah State would be a good fit for me," Shaw said. "I think Stew Morrill has a very good track record for developing post players, and I think I can develop there."
Shaw didn't give a specific reason for leaving OSU, but did say that his relationship with Pane played a role in his decision to join the Aggies. He would give USU height, depth and athleticism in a frontcourt that's rebuilding following Tai Wesley's graduation.
At Oklahoma State this past season, Shaw played in 26 games and shot 50 percent from the field. He played a season-high 23 minutes in a 67-66 loss to Texas A&M and scored a season-high eight points in a loss to Texas.
"Brockeith talked to me and told me that this would be a good place," Shaw said. "I played with him one year in high school, when he was a senior and I was a sophomore. It will be good to be on the same team as him again."
Shaw, who recently visited Utah State, becomes the first player to transfer to the Aggies from a BCS conference school since former Brighton High superstar Brayden Bell, who started his career at Ohio State University and came to Logan after one season with the Buckeyes.
