Larry Gelwix was carried off the field a champion.

The legendary coach led his U-19 rugby team to another title Saturday, as Highland fought off United 38-24 to capture the 2011 national championship at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Gelwix guided Highland to a 418-10 record during his 36-year tenure, collecting 20 national championships. He is retiring from the game to serve a two-year church mission.

Gelwix teared up twice during the aftermath of Saturday's victory, praising the players, parents and boosters who joined him during his journey.

"I just can't believe it's been 36 years," Gelwix said. "I'm just so proud of these guys right now."

Moments after watching Highland and United pay tribute to each other's efforts with ritualistic dances, Gelwix was lifted upon his players' shoulders and paraded along the sideline for one final honor.

"They deserve this championship," Gelwix said.
