State colleges: U. softball pitcher throws no-hitter against Idaho State

Generra Nielson threw a no-hitter and Kelsi Hoopiiaina hit a grand slam lead Utah over Idaho State 8-0 in college softball Friday at Ute Softball Field.

Nielson struck out seven and allowed four walks in five innings.

BYU 4, Loyola Marymount 0 • In Las Vegas, Paige Affleck allowed just four hits in 41⁄3 innings, and JC Clayton was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

New Mexico State 3-11, Utah State 1-6 • In Logan, New Mexico State scored six runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-all tie in Game 2 of their doubleheader sweep.

SUU 6, Utah Valley 2; SUU 4, Northern Colorado 0 • The Thunderbirds fell behind early but scored four runs in the fifth inning and had 13 hits against UVU.

Freshman Cora Cordova hit her first collegiate home run against in Game 2 for SUU, which has won five straight games.

Weber State 13, North Dakota 6 • In Ogden, Erika James and Laura Minnich each had four hits, and the Wildcats scored nine runs in the first two innings.

Baseball

BYU 8, Pepperdine 3 • In Malibu, Calif., Chris Capper scattered seven hits over eight innings, and Chase Frampton was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

UNLV 6, Utah 1 • At Spring Mobile Ballpark, Tanner Peters gave up one run on seven hits in nine innings for the Rebels.

Michael Beltran, C.J. Cron and Cody Guymon each went 2-for-4 for the Utes, who gave up four runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Saint Mary's 2, SUU 0 • In Cedar City, Martin Agosta threw a complete-game shutout for the Gaels.

Freshman pitcher Chris Chung allowed nine hits and had six strikeouts in eight innings for SUU.

Nevada 5, UVU 4 • In Reno, Nev., Cole McWhorter and Chris Benson each hit a home rus for the Wolverines, who couldn't overcome a three-run Wolf Pack fifth inning.

Women's tennis

Utah 7, New Mexico 0 • In Fort Worth, Texas, Utah's Anastasia Putilina outlasted New Mexico's Michalea Bezdickova 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 at No. 1 singles as the Utes opened Mountain West Conference play with a convincing win over the Lobos.

TCU 6, BYU 1 • In Fort Worth, Texas, Elizaveta Ezhova defeated Idunn Hertzberg 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles for the BYU's lone match win as the Cougars lost their Mountain West Conference opener.

SUU 4, Oral Roberts 2 • In Kansas City, Mo., the Thunderbirds won their ninth straight match as Olia Tatarchenko, Kirrily Burden and Danica Ingwaldson each won singles matches.

Track and field

In Orem, Andrew Graham won the 110-meter hurdles (14.87 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (53.53), and Kodi Kleven and Maryn Pincock each set school records for Utah Valley at the six-team UVU Collegiate Invitational — the school's first home meet.

Kleven won the 5,000 in 17:01.19, and Pincock won the discus with a throw of 156 feet, 2 inches.

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, Long Beach State 0 • In Provo, Futi Tavana had 11 kills and six blocks, and Alex DaPron had 10 kills and five digs as BYU beat Long Beach State 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 for its fourth straight win.
