Las Vegas • Well, San Jose doesn't lack for confidence, that's for sure.

In the moments after beating Idaho, advancing to the Western Athletic Conference semifinals and setting up a third try against Utah State, Adrian Oliver sounded as if he was ready to face the Aggies right then and there.

Even after playing almost 40 minutes against the Vandals.

"We know Utah State's the top dog in the conference," said Oliver, the leading scorer in the WAC. "But that just adds more juice to us. We have the advantage over Utah State. We're not tired. We're just warmed up."

Of course, USU's beaten San Jose State twice this season, once in a close game in Logan and once convincingly, although it should be noted that Spartans point guard Justin Graham didn't play the second time around.

On Thursday afternoon, however, San Jose had its best shooting game of the season. In the 74-68 win against Idaho, the Spartans made a season-high 13 three-pointers. In doing so, they qualified for their first WAC semifinal, and now have more wins than any San Jose State team since 1981.

"Certainly they pose a lot of problems with their shooting and their guard play," USU head coach Stew Morrill said. "They break you down off the dribble, and they play a really good matchup zone defense. So we really have a lot of things to prepare for."

The issue of fatigue is a valid one. This will be San Jose State's third game in as many nights, while the Aggies practiced in Logan all the way until Thursday before flying to Las Vegas.

It's a rest that certainly came at a good time for Utah State, with the New Mexico State-Louisiana Tech road trip being the most physically taxing of the season.

But will the Aggies be rested or rusty? If the latter proves true then Friday's semifinal could be closer than anyone associated with USU would like.

"We have to come out excited and ready to play," Tai Wesley said. "We have a lot at stake and we have to come out and play with urgency." —
