Weber State, UNLV highlight SUU football schedule

The Thunderbirds will play an all-Division I schedule for the first time in school history.

Cedar City • Nonconference games against UNLV and Weber State highlight the 2011 Southern Utah University football schedule.

The Thunderbirds will play an all-Division I schedule for the first time in school history, according to athletic director Ken Beazer.

SUU will play its final year in the Great West Conference before moving to the Big Sky in 2012.

Southern Utah won the Great West last season, when it finished 6-5.

In the final game, the Thunderbirds lost in the final minutes at Eastern Washington, 31-24. The Eagles went on to win the Football Championship Subdivision national title.

SUU will play six future Big Sky opponents this season, including Weber State, Sacramento State, Northern Arizona, Cal Poly, UC-Davis and North Dakota.

On Sept. 24, Southern Utah will play at UNLV in its first meeting with the Rebels since 1970.

The Thunderbirds also have a game against future Western Athletic Conference member Texas-San Antonio and two teams from the Missouri Valley Conference — South Dakota and Northern Iowa.

The Thunderbirds open the season Sept. 3 at South Dakota State.

Southern Utah will visit in-state rival Weber State on Oct. 22.

SUU will play five games at Eccles Coliseum and six on the road.

"I’m excited about the schedule," said coach Ed Lamb, who believes the quality and depth of opponents could help the Thunderbirds when at-large teams are selected for the FCS playoffs.

The Great West Conference champion does not receive at automatic bid.
