Logan • As a college basketball team, you're in a good spot if you have a player who can take over any game at any given time.
Utah State may have two.
The Aggies, ranked 23rd in the coaches poll, are playing some of their best offensive basketball of the season in the last two weeks. It's no coincidence that Tai Wesley and Brockeith Pane have taken things to another level.
In Saturday's 84-68 win over Idaho at the Spectrum, the two combined for 40 points, with Wesley leading things with 22. And with their performance last week at St. Mary's, they're becoming a difficult duo for any team in the Western Athletic Conference to deal with.
"They're playing very well," USU coach Stew Morrill said. "They played great at St. Mary's and they played great tonight. We hope it's a good sign."
Both have been great in spots this season, but hardly ever at the same time. Either Wesley would play well, or Pane would play well. But whenever one was on, the other seemed to sacrifice shots. In the past two weeks, however, they've been good simultaneously.
Part of it's been Pane's maturation, and his ability to get others involved while looking for his own shot. The two learning each other has helped as well.
"He's just a kid trying to find his way," Wesley said with a sarcastic smile. "We're just trying to help him grow up. Just joking. He's really started to get the offense down. He's been great with looking for his teammates, and finding holes in the defense. That's really helped out a lot."
Pane's emergence has discouraged other teams from doubling down on Wesley. At the same time, Wesley's ability to pass out of double-teams has helped create alleys and cracks for Pane to exploit. The two seemed to be figuring each other out for the first three months of the season. As February's rolled around, the two now seem to be complementing each other.
