The Utah Blaze of the Arena League signed former BYU quarterback Bret Engemann to a contract, the team announced Friday. Engemann has been b een on the roster of the Oakland Raiders (2003-05) of the NFL, as well as the Berlin Thunder and the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. Engemann "... has a great arm and will provide the depth we need in the quarterback position," Blaze coach Ron James. "He is a local guy who people have heard of and I'm looking forward to seeing him in camp." At BYU, Engemann completed 200 of 364 passes for 2,288 yards and nine touchdowns in his career. He was named Mountain West Conference's Offensive Player of the Week twice, once after a 38-35 overtime win over Virginia and once after a 42-21 victory over Syracuse. "I am really excited to be back in football and have the opportunity to compete again," Engemann said in a statement released by the team. "I'm honored to be playing in Utah and show the coaches what I have to offer." Engemann, who grew up in Utah, attended at Timpview High School in Provo. As a senior, he was named the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year, ranking among the top five passers in the nation. He threw for 2,400 yards and 23 touchdowns.
