After Monday night's loss to the Ontario Reign, the ECHL's worst team, wasn't an ideal segue into a game against the league's top squad. But the Utah Grizzlies responded with perhaps their best performance of the season.
Utah pummeled ECHL-leading Las Vegas 5-0 at Maverik Center on Wednesday night, blitzing the Wranglers for four goals in the second period alone.
Rookie center Kevin Deeth starred on offense with three assists on the night his third 3-point game against Las Vegas. Five different players scored for Utah. It was the effort head coach Kevin Colley had been looking for during the team's recent rough patch.
"All in all, I thought we had 18 guys going tonight," Colley said. "I liked the way every guy played. We had a lot of confidence."
After a first-period goal by Hugo Carpentier gave the Grizzlies the lead, Deeth sent a pass to an open Tom May who whizzed a shot past goalie Michael Ouzas. Only a minute later, Maxime Tanguay led a fast break before whipping a last-second pass to Tim Crowder, who scored his 12th goal of the season.
The rout was on for the remainder of the game: Brett Parnham and Simon Ferguson also added goals in the period to boost the lead to five scores.
"It was awesome, just exactly what we needed," Deeth said. "We really did well on power plays and running our cycle staying over the puck and finding guys open. We were just clicking tonight."
It wasn't all an offensive showcase, either. Goalkeeper Andrew Engelage was red hot in the net with 40 saves including 19 in the final period alone and earned his second career shutout. Colley called the Engelage the team's "backbone."
"We lean on him when we're down," Colley said. "We kind of hung him out to dry in the third period, but he made some unbelievable saves."
Utah is now within two points of Las Vegas in the league standings headed into a three-game road trip. The Grizzlies now own a 5-1 record against the Wranglers on the season.
