college basketball • BYU guard Jimmer Fredette was selected for The Associated Press preseason All-America team. The team, chosen by the 65-member national media panel that selects the AP Top 25 men's basketball poll, was announced Monday.

Duke's Kyle Singler was the leading vote-getter and only repeat selection for the team, while North Carolina's Harrison Barnes became the first freshman to make the list since voting began before the 1986-87 season. The other members are Kansas State's Jacob Pullen and Purdue's JaJuan Johnson.

Fredette returns for his senior season after averaging 22.1 points and 4.7 assists and leading the Cougars to a program-record 30 victories and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

• Iowa says the NCAA won't penalize the Hawkeyes for allowing two basketball recruits to meet celebrity fans Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at a football game in September. The school said that the NCAA ruled the actions by Iowa staffers were "secondary" in nature and both unintentional.

Chilean miner to run NYC Marathon

running • The Chilean miner who jogged in the tunnels while trapped underground not only will attend Sunday's New York City Marathon — he plans to run it.

Marathon officials had invited Edison Pena to watch the race after hearing his story when the miners were rescued last month. They thought he could ride in the lead vehicle or hold the finish line tape, but never expected the Chilean consulate to tell them Pena wanted to run. Pena was one of the 33 miners trapped for 69 days after an Aug. 5 collapse stranded them nearly a half-mile underground. The 34-year-old Pena, the 12th miner rescued, is a triathlete.
