Cougars beat Canadians

Jimmer Fredette went 6-for-6 from the field and finished with 16 points to lead the BYU men's basketball team to a 101-55 win over Laval University in the Cougars' exhibition opener on Friday at the Marriott Center in Provo.

Jackson Emery scored 13 points, and Brandon Davies added 10 for the Cougars.

Jean-Philipp Renaud scored 13 points to lead Laval, from Quebec City.

Cross country

BYU junior Miles Batty won the men's race at the Mountain West Conference cross country championships in Laramie, Wyo., while the Cougars finished second to New Mexico in the team competition.

Batty covered the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 1.6 seconds, and teammate Jared Ward finished third in 25:13.1.

In the women's 6K race, BYU's Kate Bowen finished fifth (21:46.1) to lead the Cougars to a third-place finish.

Utah's Amanda Mergaert finished seventh (22:06.1), leading the Utes to a fifth-place team finish.

Women's soccer

Weber State 2, Idaho State 0 • In Ogden, the Wildcats wrapped up their season with a Big Sky Conference win over the Bengals.

Weber State's Ari Wood scored in the seventh minute, and Nicole Moore added an insurance goal for the Wildcats (3-15-1, 2-4-1) in the 66th minute.

Women's volleyball

SLCC 3, North Idaho 1 • Erika Charry had 16 kills, and Catalina Charry had 42 set assists and 13 digs as Salt Lake Community College won 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14.

Swimming

The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team beat Denver 165-133 on Friday, while the Denver men beat Utah 151-141.

Utah's Danielle Caldwell won the women's 200 backstroke in 2 minutes, 6.46 seconds for her first career victory for the Utes.

Fredette leads BYU over Laval in exhibition opener.
