Woods Cross • With five minutes to play, the Woods Cross girls' soccer team was in control. One minute later, it was fighting to prevent an unlikely comeback from region rival Olympus.

It was the last thing new coach David Newman wanted to see.

"We gave ourselves four scary minutes there," Newman said. "By that time, the game should have been out of sight."

Ultimately, the Wildcats fended off the charge to escape with 2-1 win over the Titans on Tuesday.

Woods Cross wasn't short on opportunity.

Aside from their five-minute defensive lull late in the game, the Wildcats controlled the pace, chasing down every loose ball with ferocity and forming a midfield defensive barrier that the Titans were rarely able to penetrate.

Jen Anderson netted the Wildcats' first goal in the sixth minute and, over the next 40, Woods Cross consistently found itself in scoring position. Tiffany Trost was tireless in her efforts on the left wing, patiently protecting the ball to wait for the perfect moment to deliver well-timed crosses to her teammates in front of goal.

But after numerous attempts flew just wide, sophomore Aliyah Miller received a gift. With no defenders in sight, Miller chased down a perfect bounce and easily tapped it past Olympus goalkeeper Becca Alley to put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the 65th minute.

"I just kind of let it go down the middle and just finished it," Miller said.

But the Titans weren't done playing yet. In the 76th minute, Savannah Spere hit the net for Olympus, reigniting the Titans' attack.

Though the Wildcats held off the charge, the late defensive breakdown only added to Newman's concern about the Wildcats' inability to follow through on scoring opportunities.

"But I'd be more worried if we weren't getting chances at all," Newman said. "We've got great ball movement so we know that eventually we'll get some through." —
