Spanish Fork starts strong

The Dons of Spanish Fork are doing pretty well on the volleyball court so far this season. Their team is very senior heavy but only has two returning seniors with varsity experience — Makyla Theurer and Tanner Tobiasson.

"We're doing surprisingly well," said coach Diana Troyer. "The rest of the team, this is their first taste of varsity, but I've been pleased with their performance so far."

Brooke Thurgood is making a name for herself on the court. Troyer said she is Spanish Fork's best passer and one of the best at anticipating where the ball will come. She waits for the ball to come to her and doesn't waste time diving to catch balls in the wrong place.

Troyer said Theurer is her go-to girl, especially in the outside hitter position. What makes her a tough competitor is that she can kill the ball from the back or front row, which makes her hard to defend.

"Our defense is by far the biggest strength on our team," Troyer said. "The team is very well balanced and strong at serving and passing."

Pleasant Grove football

At 0-3, the Vikings are in a bad way. They haven't had a season start off this terribly since 2005. But in a region where Pleasant Grove, Alta and American Fork are tied for last place and Hillcrest is on top, you know something is off.

The Vikings have a young team and so far have had trouble rallying to get wins.

"We're at the point where we had to find out where we are at," coach Dale Sampson said. "We are very young this year and we're retooling this year."

Cooper Caldwell is setting himself apart from his teammates this season. With three touchdowns, 18 carries and 102 yards, he is doing better than anyone else. In the quarterback position, two are vying for the title of starter.

Zack Christensen and Paul Hatch have been switching off this season with little success. Christensen has only completed 3-11 passes with no touchdowns thrown. Hatch has a better average with 12-30 and more yards with 152 but hasn't been great either. This is becoming standard for this team, which last year made a good run in the state tournament.

"Our team had a lot of mental mistakes so far this season and we've got to fix that," Zack Christensen said. "We had a lot of break down, a lot of people going wrong places and that has to change."

Pleasant Grove will take on Hillcrest tomorrow in their first region game. The Huskies have the best start on a season since 2005 and want to start out region play strong. The Vikings are going to have to pull it together to secure a win as region play starts. —
