South Jordan •Senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell unleashed a dizzying array of bubble-screens, short passes, roll-out completions and deep throws to lead Bingham to a 48-3 victory against Pleasant Grove
The often ground oriented Miners rushed for 237 yards and five touchdowns in last week's win over Alta. Thursday, 5A's top ranked team turned to the air, and the strong right arm of Cantwell.
"We really practiced all week on throwing the ball," Cantwell said. "Our coaches saw some things on film and the offensive line did an awesome job of picking up guys and giving me time."
Bingham opened scoring with a 10-yard run from Richie Vakapuna, before Pleasant Grove got right back into the contest with a drive aided by three defensive penalties from the Miners. The Vikings scored late in the second on a field goal from Winston Sorhaitz.
Leading 7-3 to start the second quarter, Cantwell took over. The senior unleashed a 25-yard scoring strike to Josh Smith, then scored on a one-yard run, before completing his first half with a 17-yard scoring strike so Sean Larson. Cantwell found the end zone twice more in the third quarter, connecting with Dalton Fackrell via the air, before legging out a busted play for a rushing touchdown.
"I think Stefan is the best quarterback in the state," said Miners coach Dave Peck. "We know what a special kid he is and he demands perfection from his teammates."
About the only thing Peck could find fault with his team were penalties
"On Pleasant Grove's scoring drive, we had two pass interference calls but I don't think our guys could have done anything different," said Peck. "Our kids fly around and make things happen."
Senior running back Harvey Langi, so dominant in the rivalry victory over Alta, failed to find the endzone Thursday, instead serving as a decoy for much of the night.
Bingham improves to 3-0, while Pleasant Grove falls to 0-3.
