Farmington • A pair of Utah amateurs, including Layton High senior Brandon Kida, are among a trio of golfers leading the way following the first round of the Utah Open Championship, one that was suspended by dark following a delay by rain and lightning.
Kida, Cameron Crawford a 22-year-old Sandy native who qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament earlier this summer and Denver pro Nicholas Mason shared the lead with at 6-under 65 at Oakridge Country Club.
Kida, last year's Class 5A Utah state champion as a junior, was not overwhelmed by his position, saying he could have had a lower score.
"I felt good coming into the week," the 18-year-old Kida said. "I would have been disappointed if I had not been under par."
Defending champion Nathan Lashly was at 4-under par. Former champion Clay Ogden of Bountiful was one of four golfers one shot off the lead. Eight groups were still on the course when play was suspended. They are scheduled to tee off today at 6:45 a.m.
"I played pretty solid today," Ogden said. "I told my dad, whether I shot a 68 or 62, I just wanted to play a consistent 18 holes."
All the leaders but Crawford will tee off this afternoon on the par-72 course.
