Four Springville High School football players were injured Tuesday when the Jeep in which they were “spinning donuts” rolled over in the school parking lot, police said.
One of the players, running back Brandon Curtis, was critically injured and remained on life-support Wednesday. All four were taken to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Two of them, Zach Puckett and Kaleb Cook, were released by late afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said, while Estafon Ramos remained hospitalized in good condition.
“It was just four extremely close friends leaving football practice,” said Richard Puckett, the father of Zach Puckett. “Too fast in the parking lot, control was lost, skidded and rolled over.”
The football team had just finished practice at about 11:37 a.m. when the Jeep rolled over, and two of the players were ejected. Police said that stunned teammates rushed to help, and called 911 to report the accident. The nature and extent of the players’ injuries was not available.
Several players said Curtis was in the passenger seat at the time of the accident, but not thrown from the Jeep.
The Red Devils were expected to field a strong team this season, after losing the Class 4-A championship game to Timpview last year. Coach Scott Mitchell held a team meeting at the school on Tuesday afternoon, when about two dozen players gathered to lend one another moral support. Mitchell said the team plans to practice as usual today.
“We’re going to try to push through this,” he said.
