The Tooele Army Depot is receiving a second wind turbine, this one producing enough energy to power 400 to 500 homes.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $5.5 million contract to Icenogle Construction Management Inc., of San Francisco, on July 8. In the spring of 2015, the company will begin construction and installation of a 2-megawatt wind turbine to power the Tooele Army Depot.
The Depot received its first wind turbine in 2011, and a solar array in 2012.
The Tooele Army Depot stores ammunition — from .45-caliber bullets to bombs and missiles — for Army, Air Force and Navy facilities in the western United States and much of the Pacific Rim. It also destroys obsolete ammunition.
