Salt Lake City unveils new fast-charge stations for electric vehicles
First Published May 20 2014 03:19 pm • Last Updated May 20 2014 09:19 pm

Salt Lake City is opening two new "fast-charge" stations near The Leonardo museum that will allow owners to charge most electric vehicles in less than an hour.

The new 480-volt stations, donated by Nissan and installed using funds from the state Office of Energy Development and the Utah Clean Air Partnership, are among the first of their kind in Utah. Located at 255 E. 500 South, they also add to the capital city’s charging station array at five existing charging stations.

Existing stations recently were upgraded to higher voltage units, which should allow users to recharge their vehicles in about one third the time.

The stations will remain free for public use, including parking for up to two hours. But the city council is considering a fee schedule for the new fast-charge stations at an amount that would pay for electricity and help cover costs for monitoring and maintaining the stations.

Mayor Ralph Becker said supporting electric vehicles is one among several efforts to improve air quality.

Locations of all the Salt Lake City charging stations are listed here.
