A new community park will be created near downtown Salt Lake City to honor police Officer Ron Heaps, who was killed in the line of duty Jan. 13, 1982.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at the site of the new park, 254 E. Herbert Avenue.

The park will feature a gazebo for neighborhood gatherings and a series of raised vegetable-planter boxes that will be shared among residents and nearby Lincoln Elementary School. The park also will contain a monument that provides details of Heaps' death and a statue honoring all police officers.
