In Their Own Words: Revamping the attorney general job
First Published Feb 17 2014 10:01 am • Last Updated Feb 18 2014 08:35 am

Senate Joint Resolution 3 would revamp the attorney general position, making it a gubernatorial appointment instead of a statewide elected office, and the officeholder would be limited to one six-year term.

Sponsor Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Davis and Salt Lake counties, says restructuring the office would prevent the type of abuse of power and campaign finance allegations currently facing former attorney general John Swallow. If the resolution is passed by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, it still would need to be approved by voters.
