If you ever wanted to try out one of those green bicycles stationed around downtown Salt Lake City, Tuesday could be your day.

Sept. 24 is "free GREENbike day." The nonprofit bike share program — called GREENbike — is offering a free 24-hour membership at any of its 12 downtown stations. Just use the code "123" and pedal away.

"We want downtown workers to use bike share because it's practical. It's faster than driving or walking downtown," said GREENbike director Ben Bolte. "Going to meetings, lunch with co-workers, or just a couple rides around the block to clear those midday cobwebs."

Salt Lake City's bike share program was launched in April. The initial program included 55 bicycles and 10 stations.

With high membership and user demand, two more stations were added in July, as well as 20 bikes, Bolte said. The program is set to expand again next spring.

The bikes are not rentals. The program works through memberships that range from $5 for 24-hour access to $75 for a year.

Bike share allows a member to take any bike from any station, as many times as you want, for 30 minutes at a time for no additional charge. Once the bike is docked at any station, the user is no longer responsible for it.

Users are, however, responsible for usage fees and any damage.
