Farmington mayoral candidate John C. Bowker Jr. withdrew from the race on Thursday, saying the demands of his new job did not leave enough time for him to serve in public office.

"Even though the position of mayor for Farmington City might be classified as a part-time position, in order to serve as mayor effectively, it requires more time, probably full time," Bowker said in a letter to city officials announcing his decision. "I owe it to my employer and to my family to focus on my new employment."

He also praised the only remaining candidate — and apparent future mayor — City Councilman Jim Talbot, as a "dedicated and qualified leader."

Because Bowker and Talbot were the only two candidates who filed to run for mayor, there was no primary to narrow the field for the Nov. 5 general election.

Mayor Scott Harbertson is not seeking re-election.

Bowker recently accepted a job with Cisco Systems Inc., a California-based Internet technology company, and will work from a Utah office.

He will continue to live in Farmington and says he plans to remain involved in community matters.
