UTA offers free fare from the State Fair

The Utah Transit Authority is offering what amounts to half-fare for round trips to the Utah State Fair on its new airport extension of the TRAX green line.

If people buy a one-way TRAX ticket to the fair, they can have it stamped at the entry gate. The stamped ticket is good for free return fare on a UTA train or bus.

The State Fairpark has its own stop on the green line at 1150 W. North Temple.

"UTA undertook this as a way to promote our new airport extension to the TRAX green line," said UTA spokesman Remi Barron.

"We see this as a good way to reach out to new customers who might not be heading out of town" at the airport, he said. "It is the first year that people can ride TRAX all the way to the fairgrounds." The green line opened in April.

The UTA also is giving away 25 passes to the fair each day before the fair opens. It distributes information about where it will hand out those tickets on its Twitter account.

The fair opens Thursday and runs through Sept. 15. The fair opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends. While TRAX service is offered during most of those hours, the last green line train from the Fairpark Station is at 8:06 p.m. on Sundays — hours before the fair closes those days.
